AI and human connection

While it’s hard to not feel numb to the world when everywhere you look civilised society seems to be unravelling at the seams, one has to put some effort into looking at the past and thinking of the future. And how we might not be as screwed as it seems.

Unnatural AI

To most, AI means an oracle - a mysterious intelligence that anyone can access but no one really understands. They do understand that it’s not a human; no human or set of humans could respond with such confidence and agility on the variety of topics that ChatGPT or Claude are experts in. Similarly, it would take a very unsettling type of human to spew facts and commentary about which they have zero knowledge or experience. All this is to say that LLMs can play a convincing charade of what a real intelligence might write, there are fundamental differences between them and what they are trying to replicate. There are, after all, no large language models that have experienced the same course of organic development to which all humans can relate.
